Setting up the loom

As shown in the photograph, the
Navajo vertical loom consists of a sturdy frame of upright
posts, from which are suspended and anchored horizontal
wooden bars. These play an important role in the weaving
process. Foundation warp strings are evenly strung between
the upper and lower bars. Upon these strings, the weft
threads will be woven to create the weaving. The vertical
loom allows constant control over the tension of the
warp strings, ensuring a strong and smooth foundation
for the rug.
