The vast expanse of the Navajo nation is broken in part by the various patterns reflected in their weaving. Our attempt at categorizing these patterns results in the 12 styles depicted below. The genesis of these distinct patterns in most instances is geographical, heavily influenced by the trading post established in that particular area of the reservation.

Teec Nos Pos

Not far from Four Corners, where Arizona, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico meet at a common point, lies Teec Nos Pos, "Circle of Cottonwoods." Surrounded by a wide border, filled with lavish geometric designs and an exuberant variety of colors, Teec Nos Pos rugs are often large. Because of the size and complexity of the pattern (many argue a Persian influence), Teec Nos Pos weavings can be expensive. The trademark of a Teec Nos Pos weave is the contrasting color outlining each design element of the rug. The Teec Nos Poc trading post, still operating, reflects a strong image of life on the reservation.
