Riches of the Southwest

Clay figures of animals and humans have been made by native Southwestern potters almost as long as people have inhabited this land. In 1964, Helen Cordero of the Cochiti Pueblo in New Mexico depicted her grandfather as she had known him, beating his drum and singing the ancient songs and stories as his grandchildren clung to, climbed on and surrounded him. The charm, tenderness and affection portrayed by storyteller figures crosses all barriers of age and culture to touch the heart of anyone who ever sat at the knee of a true teller of tales.
