Riches of the Southwest

Hopis regard themselves as the first inhabitants of the Southwest.  Archeologists acknowledge the Hopi village of Oraibi to be the oldest continuously inhabited community in the United States. Many believe the Hopis are the descendants of the Anasazi.

Kachina - Heoto Mana

$7.00

Heoto Mana - the sister of the Heoto kachina, who functions as a guard during the Bear Dance processions and appears in other Kiva and plaza ceremonies.

Kachinas protect, instruct, admonish and are advocates for the Hopi. They are spirit beings from all nature--animals, birds, plants, sky, water, fire, even stars. The name "Kachina" also refers to humans representing the spirits in ceremonies and to the carvings made in their likeness. The dolls were originally made for children, not as toys, to teach the attributes and functions of each Kachina to the young. Putska Tihu "flat doll" is the simple style of Kachina doll Hopi children receive in infancy. Ours are approximately 4" in length, 2" wide and are lightweight, making them great Christmas ornaments.
