The Athapascans, common ancestors of the Navajo and the Apache, reached the Southwest shortly after 1000 A. D. as nomadic bands of hunters and gatherers. The Navajo's influence has been felt ever since. Sandpaintings are one such example. There are most likely over a thousand ceremonial sandpaintings.

Part of most Ways (curing ceremonies), Father Sky (Yaah-diklith-beh-hosteen) and Mother Earth (Nahast-tsan beh-assun) appear because of their power and all-pervading importance. In the body of Mother Earth (right) are the four sacred plants corn, beans, squash, and tobacco. Father Sky's body contains the constellations, sun and moon. Framed and double matted. Size: 10 ½" x 10 ½".
