The Athapascans, common ancestors of the Navajo and the Apache,
reached the Southwest shortly after 1000 A. D. as nomadic
bands of hunters and gatherers. The Navajo's influence has
been felt ever since. Sandpaintings are one such example. There are most likely over a thousand ceremonial sandpaintings.
