Riches of the Southwest

The Athapascans, common ancestors of the Navajo and the Apache, reached the Southwest shortly after 1000 A. D. as nomadic bands of hunters and gatherers. The Navajo's influence has been felt ever since. Sandpaintings are one such example. There are most likely over a thousand ceremonial sandpaintings.

First, the pots are slip-cast and dried to a leather-hard stage. At this point, they are hand smoothed, finished and allowed to dry. In the next step, bands of color are applied and the pot dries again. Finally, using sharp tools, the dried pot is hand-etched. Each pot is signed by its creator. The pots come in two sizes.

Size: 4"H x 5"W - The coloration is gray, green and white bands on a natural red clay background on a vase-shaped vessel.
