The Athapascans, common ancestors of the Navajo and the Apache, reached the Southwest shortly after 1000 A. D. as nomadic bands of hunters and gatherers. The Navajo's influence has been felt ever since. Sandpaintings are one such example. There are most likely over a thousand ceremonial sandpaintings.

Navajo woodcarvings are inspired by Hopi Kachina dolls and illustrate the Navajo's way of incorporating other traditions into their own, while reflecting the spirit of the Southwest. Approximately 8" L, 2-2 ½" W.
