The Athapascans, common ancestors of the Navajo and the Apache, reached the Southwest shortly after 1000 A. D. as nomadic bands of hunters and gatherers. The Navajo's influence has been felt ever since. Sandpaintings are one such example. There are most likely over a thousand ceremonial sandpaintings.

The Navajo Wedding Basket is one of the most easily recognized Southwest Indian basket designs. Used in many ceremonies, including weddings, they originated with Navajo basket-weavers. However, Navajo women were subject to many taboos regarding their construction and for a time, Apaches, Utes and Paiutes began making them. We were fortunate to find 10 baskets at a trading post not far from the Four Corners area. Approximately 11" D.
