Riches of the Southwest

The Athapascans, common ancestors of the Navajo and the Apache, reached the Southwest shortly after 1000 A. D. as nomadic bands of hunters and gatherers. The Navajo's influence has been felt ever since. Sandpaintings are one such example. There are most likely over a thousand ceremonial sandpaintings.

Pitch Pot (Basket)

$27.00

  Quantity

Pitch pots are baskets woven in a jar shape with horse hair handles. In former times, these baskets were not of great quality and they were given a coating of pinyon pitch, both inside and out. The pitch made them watertight and compensated for their loose weave. The fresh pine scent exuded as the pitch pot is warmed by the sunlight is an added bonus. Our pitch pots are miniatures 1 ½" H x 1 ½" W (approx.), with the usual heavy pitch coating and horsehair handle. A perfect tree ornament and collectible. Each signed by the artist.
