In 1920, Maria Martinez of the San Ildefonso pueblo revived a method of firing pottery which imparted a black finish. This highly polished, black matte on black ware is the trademark of both Santa Clara and San Ildefonso potters, though red slip is also used. Other decorative methods include painted polychrome designs, carved designs and sgraffito.

Maria Martinez Pot

$2,700.00

Maria Martinez is deservedly one of the most famous native artisans of all time. With her husband Julian Martinez, Maria changed the face of San Ildefonso pottery and influenced generations of craftsmen, her own descendants and scores of others. Her pieces are treasures, usually held in private collections. Whenever one comes our way, we buy it immediately. This elegant pot is a beautiful example of her work--classic simplicity of form and the faintly opalescent "gunmetal" finish, unequaled by any other potter. Size: 5"W x 4 ½"H. Signed "Maria Poveka."
