Baskets
Southwest Indian baskets can be hung using thread or fishing line. Near the center of the basket, you can generally run a piece of thread or line between the coils and the stitches. If necessary, a needle can be used to push the thread or line through a very tight weave. When hanging baskets, keep in mind that too much direct sunlight can discolor and even fade the baskets. In the family quarters at Hubbell Trading Post, now a National Monument, the ceilings are covered with beautiful antique baskets.
A liner should be used with these baskets if they are used for serving food. Baskets can be cleaned by using mild detergent suds and a soft brush. Avoid immersing or soaking a basket, as some of the natural dyes may not be stable and may run or discolor, this also dries the fibers and makes them brittle. After rinsing, make sure the basket dries completely. Avoid placing it near a heat source when drying as this also dries the fibers and makes them brittle.
