The process of overlay involves cutting a shape from a sheet of silver, or nowadays, gold, and then using small saws, cutting figures and designs into this shape. It is then soldered onto a solid silver or gold backing piece that has been cut to the same shape. The piece is then oxidized to emphasize the designs, and the surface is buffed and polished.
